New Year’s Resolutions For Writers

It’s that time of year again, and amongst writers it’s time to decide what resolutions we’d like to set for the upcoming year. Are you looking for some ideas? Here are a few:

Write it. Yes, we mean the book, autobiography, bestselling novel, whatever it is; it is time to write it. Just start and get it going, you will not regret doing so. Honestly, the longer you wait, the harder it will be to get it down as memories start to fade and notes no longer make sense, so just do it!

Read. Yes, you read that correctly, if you do more of that, it can get you out of your own mind, create a different landscape for you mentally. You can perhaps see how and why certain books changed our perspectives, or history. This is also a great exercise for helping you to listen to another writer’s voice. Doing so can help you to refine your own.

Language learning. To be able to express yourself in another language is a phenomenal feeling, as well as being able to read works in the language in which they were originally written. In other languages, there are nuances and words that don’t exist in English, and it is an eye opening experience. Go on, which language inspires you?

These are only a few ideas; you should choose what invigorates you. That is the most important aspect when making resolutions as a writer. What makes you want to write? What refreshes you? What do you need to do to help you improve your writing? These are the questions you should ask yourself, and the resolutions should then naturally come of their own accord.
